David Ambrose
Ambroses’ work is a supreme mix of precision and chance. It involves a three part process: first, meticulously perforating a sheet of paper, second, submerging the paper in a pool of watercolor, and third, augmenting the interaction of pigment to perforations with watercolor, color pencil, and both conventional and polymer gouache. The result is a mix of painstaking perforations and patterns of chance, and at times intensely chromatic.
In 2016 Ambrose was selected for a mid-career retrospective at the New Jersey State Museum. He holds a B.A. in fine arts from Muhlenberg College and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, and has taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons, and Middlesex County College. His work is in such collections as the Zimmerli Art Museum, the Jersey City Museum, the New Jersey State Museum, and the Noyes Museum of Art.
